About John

Dr John A. Barry is a Chartered Psychologist and Professional Researcher.  He is a leading expert in the areas of male psychology including men’s mental health and the psychological aspects of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).  He is an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society, Clinical Hypnotherapist and Honorary Lecturer in Psychology at University College London.  His Ph.D. was awarded by City University London, on the topic of the psychological aspects of PCOS. 

 In addition to blogs and media articles, John is the author and editor of 3 books and around 80 peer-reviewed publications on a variety of topics in psychology and health.  His specialist areas of expertise are research (methodology - mainly survey methods and meta-analyses), male psychology, polycystic ovary syndrome (women’s health), clinical hypnosis (or ‘hypnotherapy’), colour blindness research.  As a professional researcher, John has also taken an interest in improving the teaching of research methods and statistics. John offers a number of professional services with regards to his specialist areas.  

Across his expertise areas, John’s work has involved some exciting collaborations and partnerships.  With regards to PCOS, his research, in conjunction with gynaecologists and endocrinologists, mainly at University College London, has produced some of the key studies in this area.   With regards to Male Psychology and men’s mental health, he has collaborated with organisations such as Harry’s Inc.  as well as joining forces with experts such as Dr Warren Farrell, and receiving praise from Dr Jordan Peterson (for his blog on the APA guidelines on working with men and boys).  He has advised organisations such as CALM and The Royal Foundation. His work has been featured in various media outlets such as the Metro and The Telegraph, The Sun and The Daily Mail.  He has also presented his work at the Houses of Parliament, various universities - including University College London - and spoken at conferences for various organisations, including the British Psychological Society.   

John is also an experienced clinical hypnotherapist. After training with the London College of Clinical Hypnosis, and receiving a diploma in Clinical Hypnois (DHyp) from the Psychotherapy and Hypnosis Training Association at Regent’s College (now Regent’s University), Dr Barry started his hypnotherapy practice in London in 1999. Due to a growing interest in the connection between psychology and health, he undertook an MSc in Health Psychology (University of Westminster). This led to a PhD in Psychology (City University London) after which he worked as a researcher at University College London (UCL) and became a Member of the exclusive British Society of Clinical and Academic Hypnosis. Today, Dr Barry balances cutting-edge research activities with a successful research practice.
